Isabel Asha Penzlien was born and raised in Hamburg, Germany and moved to New York
to study fine art photography at ICP in 1995. Her work has appeared in various publications,
including Catholic, The Guardian, I-D Magazine, Index and Teen Vogue. Her photographs have
been published in a number of books, both self-published and by Forsythian Press.
After 3 years as the photo director at Opening Ceremony she went back to freelance
photography in 2018. She lives and works in New York City.
Isabel Asha Penzlien established 'Portraits by Isabel' in 2009 as a means to
combine her ongoing portrait projects with her love of families and interest
in the portrait as a way to honor the unique value of individuals, groups and
their surroundings. She brings to every portrait her many 25 years of
experience, having moved through fine art, editorial and commercial contexts
yet always bringing her quietly poetic sensibility to whatever it is she shoots.
This sensibility makes for portraits that are a more personal and genuine reflection
of home and family, with an emphasis on the process always being comfortable and fun.
Her work has been published in Teen Vogue, i-D, Domino, W, Martha Stewart and
the Guardian among many others. She has shot a diverse group of celebrities
such as Carla Bruni, Karl Lagerfeld, Jeff Koons and Rhianna, and published several
fine art books of her portraits and landscapes.
